India's World Cup Hopes Dented
India's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a setback on Tuesday as they lost 1-2 to Afghanistan in their opening qualifier at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.
The match was evenly contested in the first half, with both teams creating chances. However, it was Afghanistan who took the lead in the 35th minute through a penalty from Faysal Shayesteh. India drew level in the 55th minute through Sunil Chhetri, but Afghanistan regained the lead just two minutes later through Milad Intezar.
India pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Afghanistan held on to secure a famous victory.
The result leaves India bottom of Group E after the first round of fixtures. They will now face Bangladesh in their next match on Saturday.
